If you love Indie films and are looking to get a bit cultural with your movie-watching experience, then New York City’s Winter Film Awards (WFA) is perfect for you. The WFA is a volunteer organization that uses the concepts of film and film-making to promote the beauty of diversity.
What the Winter Film Awards Festival Offers
Taking pride in selecting the films they show because of their emphasis on cultural variety, one of their goals is to allow their audience to enjoy films most movie-goers would not usually consider. The organization’s mission is “to recognize excellence in cinema and to promote learning and artistic expression for people at all stages of their artistic careers with a focus on nurturing emerging filmmakers and helping them gain recognition and contacts to break into this difficult industry.”
The WFA’s sixth festival boasts an interesting list of new filmmakers from around the globe. The diversity present in this line-up is demonstrated by the numbers the WFA shared about its festival. According to the WFA, “For the 2016 Festival, 86 films from 26 countries were selected for screening, 40% made by women, 40% made by people of color, 26 first-time directors. 75% had a budget under $50k, and a half passed the ‘Bechdel Test.’”
Winter Film Awards Festival’s Focus on Diversity
Awards will be handed out for the best films in the lineup, including Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Original Score, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Student Film and the NY Perspectives Award for best depiction of the New York multi-cultural experience.
Film lovers everywhere should attend this interesting event since the WFA brings to its audience unique films that create inspiration, cultural understanding, and respect for the filmmakers. One thing that makes the WFA different from some of the other film festivals in New York is their focus on diversity as well as their goal of promoting new filmmakers.
