The Story of Ram 2020Â is a modern, cross-cultural interpretation of the epic Ramayana. Permeating dance theatre and music traditions throughout South and Southeast Asia, the mythology of Ram, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman exiled in the forest - and at odds with the brilliant king Ravana - has seen myriads of interpretations over the centuries.
In our retelling, companies from around the world share their depiction of episodes from the Ramayana; joining us this year, we will see martial artists from Manipur, Kandyan dance from Sri Lanka, as well as performances presented by our Midwestern diaspora, from Balinese, Thai and several Indian cultures. The tale that arises for 2020 is both old and new, resonating with today's artists and their communities; we see a need for unity and compassion, despite differences in perspective.
