In recognition of Black History Month (2017), The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with Georgia State University’s Department of African American Studies, will host The Congress of African People, Black Power and the United Front by Dr. Michael Simanga of Georgia State University. From his latest book, Amiri Baraka and the Congress of African People: History and Memory, Dr. Simanga will provide personal reflections, historical narrative, and contemporary analysis of this consequential organization and the continued importance of Black Power and the concept of the Black United Front. His book and lecture will discuss the role of the poet Amiri Baraka and the Black Arts Movement, the African Liberation Support Committee, the Gary Convention, the National Black Agenda, the Black Women's United Front, electoral politics and the new left.
