AmeRican Poet Tato Laviera tells a powerful story of a prolific poet, playwright, and community activist, beloved by his community. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in NYC, Laviera’s poetry reflects his bicultural, bilingual Nuyorican life while celebrating the universality of the human condition. He combined Puerto Rican culture with that of the streets of the Lower East Side and El Barrio. His skillful use of language, weaving Spanish, English and Spanglish in his poems, addresses language, cultural identity, race, and the sense of alienation many feel when they are not accepted in their native or adopted land.
